Dogs eating cat poop and litter is one of the most common problems in homes with both. It is unpleasant, and clumping litter is bad for a dog's gut. Baby gates and hood lids rarely hold for long. The answer is a door sized for the cat and not the dog.

A 20 cm round door keeps out most dogs. A small terrier can still squeeze through one at floor level. So our dog-proof door sits 25 cm off the floor, with a step inside for the cat. Cats jump that easily. Short-legged dogs do not.

Door: Round, 20 cm for most cats, set 25 cm up the side of the cabinet.
Step: A felt-lined step inside the door, so the cat lands softly and leaves litter behind.
Dog den: Our Cat and dog sideboard pairs the litter compartment with a den for the dog.
Access: A front door with a latch for you, which the dog cannot nose open.

Our rule: the litter box is about 1.5 times the length of the cat, up to 75 cm, about the largest box sold. The compartment adds 10 cm all round. Sizes for the larger cat of each breed. We check the numbers against your own cat.

Questions

Why does my dog eat cat litter?

Cat food is high in protein, so cat poop smells like food to many dogs. Some dogs also eat litter out of boredom. Vets advise keeping them apart, because clumping litter can block a dog's gut.

My dog is very small. Will the door still keep it out?

Tell us the dog's shoulder height and chest width. A door 25 cm off the floor stops most small dogs, and we can raise it further or make it narrower if needed.

What if I have a large cat?

A Maine Coon or Norwegian Forest cat needs a 24 cm door. That is wide enough for some small dogs, so we raise the door and the step a little more.
