In homes with a dog and a cat, the cat food often ends up in the dog. Cat food is too rich in fat and protein for dogs, and the cat no longer gets to eat. Putting the bowl on a cupboard only works until the dog can reach it.
Our feeding station keeps the two apart. The dog's bowls sit in a drawer at his height. The cat's food sits raised in a compartment behind a cat door set high in the side. The cat jumps in, the dog does not fit.
